This photo was originally taken simply to test the optical quality of a new lens. However the final image seen here was the result of an accident. In 1963 André Kertész regained possession of negatives that he had left behind in France when he moved to New York. Upon receiving the negatives he discovered that many of the glass plates were broken. He resigned himself to throwing them away, with the exception of this one, which had been fortuitously transformed by the breakage.
